Beech
Native plant with superb foliage, medium green leaves turning rich copper in autumn. Not suitable for heavy or wet soil where Hornbeam is preferable. Shade tolerant. If a Beech hedge is trimmed in late summer, the leaves remain on better during the winter.
HEDGE Retains copper foliage throughout the winter. Trim July or August. For hedges 3ft (90cm) upwards. Plant 9-18ins (23-45cm) apart or for a denser or stock-proof hedge plant in a staggered double row with 15ins (38cm) between rows and 18ins (45cm)
between plants.

BLACKTHORN
Prunus spinosa, SloeDense, prickly, native, deciduous plant with new shoots finely downy becoming smooth by winter, purple in sun or green in shade. Masses of snow white flowers appear in March before the leaves, and these are followed by sloes which turn from purple to black in autumn. Any soil, but will thrive on quite poor soil.
TO HEDGE Trim as necessary. For hedges 3-10ft (0.9-3m). Plant 18ins (45cm) apart.

BOX, DWARF
Buxus sempervirens Suffruticosa
Very dense small-leaved evergreen, with dark green glossy foliage slightly smaller than Common Box. Very slow growing and shade tolerant. Ideal edging shrub.
TO HEDGE Trim August or September. For hedges up to 2ft (60cm). Plant 4-6ins (10-15cm) apart.

Griselina
Vigorous, dense, evergreen with handsome, broad, glossy, pale apple-green leathery leaves up to 4ins (10cm) long. Small yellow tail-like flowers in May. Needs a well-drained, fertile soil and full sun. Will withstand temperatures down to -12C (10F) makes an ideal windbreak in coastal areas with maritime winds.
TO HEDGE Trim in late spring. For hedges 4-8ft (120-140cm). Plant 1ft (30cm) apart.

Hazel
Large, fast growing, native, deciduous shrub with large mid-green leaves. Very attractive in spring when festooned with many long yellow catkins which are followed by edible nuts in autumn.
HEDGE Trim in March (taking care to leave some catkins and female flowers if nuts are wanted). For hedges 5-12ft (1.5-3.7m). Plant 2-3ft (60-90cm) apart.

Holly
A spectacular, evergreen, female form with nearly spine-free leaves green in centre with bright gold margins. Compact habit, tiny white flowers in spring followed by red berries on pollinated plants. Shade tolerant, retaining golden variegation in the shade.
HEDGE Trim late summer.Plant 1.5-2ft (45-60cm) apart.

Hornbeam
Hardy native plant similar to Green Beech with mid-green leaves, suitable for heavy wet soils, and frost pockets. Green catkins from late spring to autumn, turning to clusters of winged fruit in autumn providing food for wildlife. Shade tolerant.

Laural
Very dense, fast growing, evergreen hedge with large, leathery, glossy green leaves. In spring, upright spikes of white flowers contrast well against the foliage. This variety will form a tall, wide, substantial hedge. Shade tolerant.
HEDGE Prune in March, April or August. For hedges 4ft (120cm) upwards. Plant 18-ins (45cm) apart.

LEYLAND CYPRESS
Very fast growing dense evergreen conifer. It makes a splendid specimen tree, columnar with a narrow, dense, conic top. Grows 2.5-3ft (75-90cm) a year. Makes a good dense hedge and can be kept relatively low and narrow if regularly clipped.
HEDGE Trim in September. Plant 2ft (60cm) apart for 6ft (1.8m) hedge. For taller hedges or screens the planting distance should be about a quarter of the proposed height.

LEYLAND CYPRESS, GOLDEN
Fast growing dense evergreen conifer with golden foliage. Grows 2-2.5ft (60-75cm) a year. Can be kept as small neat hedge as long as it is regularly well pruned.
HEDGE Trim in September. Plant 2ft (60cm) apart for 6ft (1.8m) hedge. For taller hedges or screens the planting distance should be about a quarter of the proposed height.

MAPLE, FIELD
Acer campestre
Fast growing native deciduous plant with young foliage tinged red, turning to green, then yellow in autumn. Small greenish-yellow flowers in spring followed by winged seeds in autumn. Makes an excellent dense hedge. Any well drained but moist soil.
HEDGE Trim in winter. For hedges 4-15ft (1.2-4.6m). Plant 18ins (45cm) apart.

ROSE, FIELD ROSE
Common native rose of hedgerows and woods with long slender stems which trail into other plants or form a dense mound. White flowers, 1.5-2ins (4-5cm) across in July followed by dark red hips, which make excellent bird food. Shining green leaflets, which persist well into winter. Deciduous.
TO HEDGE Trim in winter if necessary. For hedges 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m). Plant 18-24ins (45-60cm) apart. Plant with other species for added interest. Trim in winter if necessary.

QUICKTHORN (Crataegus monogyna) (Hawthorn, May, Whitethorn).
Fast growing, very thorny native deciduous plant, tolerant of wet soils. Dark glossy green leaves, clusters of prominent scented white flowers in May followed by small red haws in autumn. Quickthorn makes an excellent hedge with a long season of interest, or it can be grown as specimen tree, as it is very hardy and is useful in coastal or exposed positions..
TO HEDGE Trim between July and March. For hedges 3-20ft (0.9-6m). Plant 9-12ins (23-30cm) apart or for a denser or stock-proof hedge plant in a staggered double row with 15ins (38cm) between rows and 18ins (45cm) between plants.
